START Programme

Robotics Training

The NSTC has partnered with the Shelford Group to run a platform agnostic robotics training programme.

Robotic‑assisted surgery (RAS) offers enhanced precision in minimally invasive procedures, and at the NSTC trainees gain hands‑on experience with leading systems from Intuitive, Medtronic, and CMR Surgical.
The START Programme

The START Programme offers residents the opportunity to become part of the next generation of surgeons trained to a consistent standard in robotic assisted surgery on the leading platforms available in the NHS today.

Designed to provide a comprehensive and standardised training experience, the START Programme offers access to high quality training, simulation, and hands on exposure in robotic assisted surgery in your local region. Taking place over 3-4 years across four different phases, the programme reflects the complex and evolving skill set required to perform safe and effective robotic surgery, supporting sustained, progressive development.

The START Programme aims to:

· Equips trainees with essential skills for robotic and minimally invasive surgery

· Promote excellence through hands-on and simulation-based training

· Support career progression with nationally recognized certification

Trainees also gain access to a bespoke skills tracker that clearly outlines the required competencies and predefined surgical skills for each phase of training. This enables trainees to monitor and reflect on their progress throughout the programme.
